Worshipers at the Ganges River

February 26, 2001

The Maha Kumbh Mela is a spiritual event held every 144 years in Northern India. The festival is expected to attract 70 million people to a sacred location at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers for more than a month of bathing rituals. Space Imaging’s Ikonos took this detailed color photograph on January 24th, when a reported 30 million people bathed in the rivers to wash away their sins. The Ikonos satellite travels four miles per-second in an orbit 423 miles above Earth.
