Close encounter between Saturn and the Sun
May 21, 2001
Saturn and Sun viewed by SOHO
As Saturn approaches a close encounter with the Sun on May 25, NASA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) captured this extraordinary view of the ringed planet near the Sun during a stunning coronal mass ejection. SOHO’s coronagraph screens out the Sun’s blinding light, revealing not only the May 15 coronal explosion, but also the nearby planet. Saturn is the bright object at left. If you look closely, you can see the rings.
