Florida Burning
May 28, 2001
Smoke plumes from wildfires blanket much of Florida with no end in the forecast to the worst drought in the state’s history. This true-color image was taken on May 19, 2001 by NASA’s Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The fires are marked as red pixels. According to news reports, crews around the state Monday battled 182 fires. Since Jan. 1, Florida has had 2,679 wildfires, with approximately 204,000 acres burned.
