That's their playbook and they endlessly work it on all Rep candidates. If they already have one in the bag like W, they will use that to portray another candidate in the same modality. Given that, this is not a gimmick but part of the playbook. The playbook is unethical in itself because it is not about issues but demonizing the person i.e. he is as stupid and evil as W. It's also almost subliminal - I mean, it's obvious what's happening, but they don't point out the gimmick by saying something snarky like, "notice the resemblance?" The morph just unfolds over the first 5-10 seconds. I think if it were any more subtle, it could be considered manipulating the truth.
